1708 – 1770

Hannah Glasse began her life in relative comfort, the daughter of a coal trader and a family of vintners, living in London. After eloping, Hannah and her new husband experienced financial hardship, living away from family support, in Essex England. This prompted her to write one of the most widely sold recipe books of all time – “the Art of Cookery Made Plaine and Simple”.
This program can be a biographical first person lecture, followed by a q&a, or a functional cooking class, where we work through 2 recipes from the Art of Cookery, tackling the intricacies of reading historical text and interpreting ingredients and instructions, with first-person commentary. The cooking program works beautifully in a museum kitchen, but is just as much fun in your modern kitchen setting!
Program themes: history myth busting, kitchen safety in historical context, interpreting original texts, hands on history.
