America has a complicated relationship with debt. We use interest adjustment to encourage it, bonds to capitalize on it, and the court system to sanction it. Even as debt drives us forward, separate systems have developed for the financial futures of white Americans and Black Americans. This program tracks the legacies of slavery, indentured servitude, and debt as drivers of a our current legal and financial landscape, connecting to the modern prison and student debt systems. This is not a first-person, “living history” style program.
