reading ghost stories as a gauge for social progress

Gather around the campfire and join hands … Scary stories
have been a reminder of the darker side of human nature since
before we developed written language. But when you read
between the lines, ghost stories reveal our chilling social
anxieties, lessons on conformity, and desires for norm-breaking change.
This program reviews a selection of classic ghost stories, written between the 1680s and 1990s, which represent the cannon of American literary horror’s hidden allegories, lessons, and warnings.
This is not a first-person, “living history” style program. Spooky costumes optional.
